Well, today we have a happy chance to visit this country, to watch its sights, to learn some more information about Scotland. So as you see, the topic of our lesson is “My Discovery of Scotland”.

Scotland is an amazing and a beautiful country. Some guide-books “say”: “Who hasn’t seen Scotland doesn’t really know Great Britain”.
Some facts about it you have known, haven’t you?

  1. Where is Scotland situated?

  2. What is Scotland washed by?

  3. What rivers in Scotland do you know?

  1. What colour is its flag?

  2. What means white cross?

  1. Who is its Patron Saint?

  1. What is the symbol of Scotland?

Do you know why the thistle is the symbol of Scotland?

Listen to the legend and try to understand it then you’ll retell it in Russian.
Text for listening: The thistle, the national emblem of Scotland, was chosen as such because it saved the country from the enemy. This is what a legend says about it. In ancient times the Vikings landed the east coast of Scotland intending to settle in the country. The Scots took their stations behind the river Tay, the largest in Scotland .Not expecting the enemy before the next day and being tired after a long march they pitched their camp and were resting. The Normans saw that no guards protected the camp so they crossed the river intending to take the Scots by surprise. On coming quite near they took off their shoes not to make noise. But one of the Viking stepped on a thistle and scream out with pain. The alarm was given in the Scots camp and the Normans were put to flight. Scots, thankful for this help, chose the thistle as their national emblem.

What is Scotland associated with?

P1. They have unusual cloths. I want to be a cloths designer so I’ve read about it. Look at the screen. This colorful cloth is called tartan – a woolen cloth with a pattern of lines of different widths and different colours. Each clan in the Highlands has a certain color associated with it and a certain checked pattern which they wear on the kilt. (?) ‘Clan’ means family. The kilt is a knee-length dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Since the 19th century it has been associated with the wider culture of Scotland in general, or with Celtic elsewhere. It is most often made of woolen cloth in a tartan pattern

The Scottish kilt is usually worn with kilt hose (woollen socks), turned down at the knee, often with garter flashes, and a sporran (Gaelic for "purse": a type of pouch), which hangs around the waist from a chain or leather strap.

Other common accessories include:

A belt (usually with embossed buckle)

A jacket (of various traditional designs)

"black knife": a small sheathed knife worn in the top of the right hose)

Ghillie brogues are low-heeled shoes made of heavy leather, originating in Scotland

P2. And I am fond of music so I like to hear a bagpipe. I think a bagpipe is associated with Scotland too.

A set of bagpipes minimally consists of an air supply, a bag, a chanter (The chanter is the part of the bagpipe upon which the player creates the melody. It consists of a number of finger-holes), and usually a drone. Most bagpipes also have additional drones (and sometimes chanters) in various combinations, held in place in stocks.

  1. What big cities of Scotland do you know? Find them on the map.

  2. What is the capital of Scotland? Find it on the map.

  3. What sights in Edinburg do you know?

The ghost of Edinburgh castle: I hear you talk about my castle. Have you got any questions to me?

- Where is castle situated?

- It sits on top of the famous Edinburgh rock

- How old is the castle?

- In about AD 600, three hundred men gathered around their King. This is the first mention of the name of the place, which we call Edinburgh.

- What role did the castle play later?

- There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base.

- What is the castle now?

- The castle is now in the care of Historic Scotland, and is Scotland's second-most-visited tourist attraction. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial.

- Look, this is The One O'Clock Gun. It is a time signal, and is fired every day, except Sunday, at precisely 13:00

- Do you know famous Scottish people? Have you heard about such people as…

  • When is the birthday of Burns?

  • Robert Burns’ birthday is a special day in Scotland. The celebration usually takes the form of a supper (called Burns Supper) at which traditional Scottish dishes are eaten and during which a Scottish piper plays, wearing the national costume. It begins with a traditional toast: “To the immortal memory of Robert Burns”. Some of Burns most popular poems are recited. Who can recite the poem by Robert Burns “My Heart’s in the Highlands”?

P: My Heart’s is in Highlands, my heart is not here,
My Heart’s is in Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe
My Heart’s is in Highlands, wherever I go!

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth place of valour, the country of worth!

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high cover’d with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,

Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and long-pouring floods!

My Heart’s is in Highlands, my heart is not here,
My Heart’s is in Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe
My Heart’s is in Highlands, wherever I go!

Thank you. Your reciting is perfect!

One of the traditional dishes served is a haggis.

Haggis is eaten with mashed potatoes or turnips.

Well done!

Finally the host will call on one of the guests to give the vote of thanks, after which everyone is asked to stand, join hands, and sing Auld Lang Syne which brings the evening to an end.

Scottish New Year customs are also connected with Robert Burns. When the clock strikes twelve, everybody stands in a circle crossing their arms and sing “Auld Lang Syne

Dear guests let’s listen and try to sing this song.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind’?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld Lang syne?

And auld Lang syne, my dear,
For auld Lang syne,
We’ll talk a cup o’ kindness yet.
For auld Lang syne!
